What is group therapy?

Group therapy for eating disorders sees small, carefully structured groups engaging in sessions with a clear therapeutic focus. Guided discussions can help you and others going through similar experiences explore thoughts and feelings about food and body image, develop coping strategies, and reflect on progress and setbacks as a supportive unit.

Group sizes are intentionally kept small to ensure you feel comfortable, heard, and supported throughout. This atmosphere of open communication allows group therapy sessions to offer not only structured treatment but also a source of peer support and experience sharing, all of which have recognised therapeutic value in eating disorder recovery.

Eating disorder group therapy runs as part of a wider treatment programme rather than as a standalone intervention. If this form of therapy is deemed beneficial, you will be carefully matched to a group to ensure appropriate dynamics and a broad compatibility between each member’s stage of recovery. Many patients find that the connections formed within the group become an important source of motivation and accountability.

“There is something powerful about being in a room with other people who truly understand what you are going through.

Group therapy provides a space where patients can feel less alone, share what is working, and support one another through the harder days.

Clinically, it also provides important opportunities to practise skills and reflect on progress. Many of our patients tell us that their group experience became one of the most valuable parts of their treatment.”
