What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy for eating disorders consists of dedicated one-to-one sessions in which you work with a member of ABBI Clinic’s specialist team through a structured, evidence-based framework adapted to your individual needs and presentation.

In the early stages of your treatment plan, one-to-one therapy for eating disorders focuses on building a shared understanding of the thoughts, beliefs, and behaviours that are maintaining the condition. From there, these confidential sessions typically move towards gently challenging unhelpful thinking patterns and introducing behavioural changes at a pace that is both comfortable and effective for you.

Individual therapy can take many forms, each with specific focuses and methods for supporting you, and the type of therapy that will be delivered will be agreed upon starting treatment at ABBI.

Progress through one-to-one sessions is reviewed regularly, and we can adapt treatment plans as necessary if clinical needs change. Individual therapy can be delivered as a standalone outpatient intervention or as part of a more intensive programme, depending on what is most appropriate.

Chloe Stringer

Therapy Assistant

“One-to-one therapy is one of the most well-evidenced treatments we have for eating disorders, and we use it because it works.

It helps patients understand the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours around food, and, crucially, it gives them practical tools to begin changing those patterns.

Progress takes time and commitment, but the skills developed through therapy are ones patients carry with them long after treatment ends.”

Can individual therapy for eating disorders be used in combination with other treatment approaches?

Yes, depending on your needs, eating disorder treatment plans can combine individual therapy with complementary approaches like family therapy and group therapy to create as supportive a recovery programme as possible.

How many individual therapy sessions will I require?

The duration of eating disorder treatment varies, depending on the needs and circumstances of each individual. The number of therapy sessions you might need will therefore be unique to you, and you may also wish to continue having these sessions as part of your long-term outpatient recovery.
